Tour Description

Indochina is a land of haunting images - temples drowsing on the banks of the Mekong, processions of red-robed monks making their rounds through dawn streets, convoys of girls in white silks and bamboo hats cycling beneath an arch of trees, crumbling royal tombs draped in mist and nostalgia. Exotic, enigmatic, enchanting - Indochina captivates all who embrace her.
This tour is an odyssey which attempts to capture in a single journey the full canvas of Indochina, from the bustling markets of the former Saigon to the narrow lanes of Luang Prabang, from the shining palaces of Phnom Penh to the rice paddies of the Mekong Delta. Along the way we have found hotels, tours and destinations that contribute to an understanding of the place and its peoples. Inevitably it all leads to the highlight of our tour - the temples of Angkor Wat, one of the great architectural masterpieces of the world. A vast "lost city", wrapped in vines and creepers, it is, in the words of its French discoverer, "grander than anything of Greece or Rome"

* An exploration of the Mekong Delta
* Saigon and the Cu Chi Tunnels
* Two days among the temples of amazing Angkor Wat
* The island paradise of Koh Chang

This fantastic cultural journey begins in Saigon, with its evocative mix of ancient pagodas, ramshackle streets and modern skyscrapers. We have a walking tour of the city and also visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, before driving to the Mekong Delta, for a village homestay and a boat trip to the colourful floating markets of Phong Dien and Cai Rang. A morning's ferry ride then takes us from Vietnam into Cambodia, where our exploration includes the temples and palaces of downtown Phnom Penh, as well as the tragic Killing Fields. Continuing our journey by ferry to Siem Reap, we have 2 days to discover the magic of the iconic Angkor Wat temple complex. Then, after crossing the border into Thailand, we take a boat out to the island of Koh Chang for a relaxing 2-night stay at a beach hotel. A free evening in the bustling city of Bangkok brings this wide-ranging holiday to a suitably exotic conclusion.

Is this holiday for you?
This is primarily a Discovery adventure holiday which covers the highlights of the Mekong Delta Region of South East Asia, Angkor Wat in Cambodia and a short stay on the Thai island of Koh Chang. To be able to include all these highlights in the itinerary involves a considerable amount of overland travel - by private car and public bus. There is also a lot of river travel, some of it in private ';long tail'; boats and some by public ferry on the Mekong River and its tributaries. Road conditions can be variable and there are 2 border crossings - between Vietnam and Cambodia, and between Cambodia and Thailand. Boat trips can be on vessels of varying size and style. At all times you should be prepared for adventurous travel and occasional delays - patience is a virtue! Many of the sightseeing excursions (eg in Saigon and Phnom Penh) will be walking tours so you must be ready and prepared to explore on foot when required.
